Brown is the New White is a Bestseller

Bestseller-graphic-FB.pngEarly last year, PowerPAC+ founder and chairman Steve Phillips announced he was writing a book. The book was to be named Brown is the New White: How the Demographic Revolution Has Created a New American Majority. Eloquently written and data-driven, this groundbreaking and compelling book must be a bestseller. The country is hungry for analysis that helps explain the role of race in politics today - and using history and numbers proves why voters of color are the center of the Democratic Party.

A bestselling book about race and politics could start a movement and it could help frame the public discourse and the coverage of the 2016 presidential and senate races this year and beyond.

It was a tremendous group effort - including organizational partnerships, media outreach, event planning, video promotion, reviews and commitments to leverage the data-rich content in political campaigns, advocacy groups, and classrooms. Reviews came in, and they validated the power of the message:

"Steve Phillips is not only an author writing about the potential of a “New American Majority.” He is one of its gifted architects, an innovator with deep roots in electoral politics and a passion for connecting people of every race and background in common purpose. His energetic book, Brown is the New White, is both a fascinating exploration of today’s rapidly changing demographic landscape and an opportunity to see the future through the eyes of one of America’s most engaging public servants and progressive political minds." —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Alphonse Fletcher University Professor, Harvard University

Early this month, Brown is the New White became a Washington Post bestseller.

The Washington Post also published a question and answer with Steve is an example of the impact that the book has on media covering the election:

Phillips has just published a book — supported by all kinds of census, voter registration and turn out data — that signals a major moment in the life of American democracy is upon us right now. And if what Phillips is arguing is true, the Democratic Party's multi-decade pursuit of the white swing voter is not only largely pointless, but may also amount to a tactic delaying the redistribution of political power and whatever social dominance comes with it.

We made a huge impact in the course of this three month campaign. Here are some more highlights:

  • We sold more than 6,000 copies in one week. (Most non-fiction books are lucky to sell more than 2,000 copies in their lifetime!).
  • The publisher initiated a second printing of the book, which is almost unheard-of in terms of the speed of doing a second run, especially after a much larger than average initial run.
  • We had 55 media hits so far including appearances, articles and excerpts.
  • We have requests to speak at book events from New York City to Austin, to Iowa and Oregon.

This is absolutely just the beginning of the movement to influence the Democratic Party and campaigns to change their spending priorities for the roughly $2.5 billion political dollars that will be raised and spent this year. It is now crystal clear to me that "Brown is the New White" is a powerful statement at this particular point in time when the right-wing backlash to progress towards racial justice is being fanned and inflamed at the highest levels of national politics.

And it is a statement and a message that is resonating all across this country.

Throughout 2016, we’re going to continue speaking to our communities, working with our partners and spreading the messages of the book in national media and print. We have some big plans for 2016 and we want you to be part of it. But for now, please join us in taking in this moment and celebrate this huge win.
