Since the end of the National State of Disaster, the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant has been administered by new regulations, and the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has clarified several issues. Can Family Members Use One SRD Grant Address? This is a common question that many want to know.
Can Family Members Use One SRD Grant Address?
Common Address For SRD Grant Recipients
The South African Social Security Agency has introduced new regulations to administer the Social Relief of Distress. These regulations were created after the recent surge in grant applications. This high unemployment rate is largely responsible for the spike in this applications.
While some homes have multiple recipients, common addresses are not a problem. The government has also begun staggering payments based on the last three digits of an ID.
Applicants for these grants must have an SRD and be committed to addressing the underlying factors that contribute to these differences. Projects focusing on racial or ethnic health disparities must be addressing these problems.
In order to receive SRD grants, projects must be addressing documented structural racism or discrimination. These systems affect health disparities and result in different levels of health outcomes for minority populations. For example, student suspension and expulsion rates are not enough to qualify as SRDs.
Requirements For Applying For A Grant
A home can be eligible to receive an SRD if they are unemployed or share a common same place. To apply, they must provide the name, surname, and all ID numbers of member. Once the application is approved, they will receive a message on their Whatsapp stating the next steps. The applicant must provide consent for Sassa to verify all personal details.
The Minister of Social Development, Youth and Children (DSSD) informed the Committee that 500,000 additional children had dropped out of school during the AIDS pandemic. The numbers of dropouts tripled in less than two years from 230,000 before the AIDS pandemic to 750,000 by May 2021.
Poorer families, children, and learners with caregivers are at highest risk of dropping out. The Committee’s work has been critically important to improving the lives of unemployed youth.
Limitations On Eligibility For A SRD Grant
While eligibility for a SRD is universal, there are certain criteria for determining eligibility. The SASSA will check srd.sassa.gov.za banking details online about the applicant from specified data bases, including bank accounts. The applicant must be at least 18 years old and a member of the household to be considered for the grant.
If the applicant does not have a bank account, SASSA will need to validate their parents’ ID numbers. The SRD for a household may be terminated automatically if the applicant does not engage with SASSA every third month.
Furthermore, it is not available for a family’s member who receives R350 or more in financial support from a member. The SRD will automatically lapse if the applicant does not engage with the agency every third month.
Cost Of Applying For A SRD Grant
If you are eligible for a SRD grant, you can expect to receive R350 per month in food parcels or vouchers. However, this grant is not available to people who are already receiving social grants. Those who qualify for the grant must be either a South African citizen or a refugee.
Moreover, you must be unable to meet your basic financial needs. This grant is available to people who are unemployed, unable to work, or have limited income.
The SRD is intended to help the poorest of the poor in South Africa. The grant is paid through ATMs, certain retail outlets, and Post Offices with PostBank capabilities. Unfortunately, some of these outlets don’t have cash on hand.
As a result, you will have to incur unnecessary travel expenses and bank fees while transferring funds. Furthermore, it can be difficult to visit an outlet in a rural area.
Last but not least, due to the covid-19, there are many things of process changed in South Africa. The process should take about six weeks, but it is possible to wait until mid-June before receiving your check. If you need to find and read more about Sassa, search more on our website.
