What is Formspring?
Formspring is a social networking site that was started by Ade Olonoh in 2009. It was a question and answer based site and is a social networking site in the same sense as Twitter. The only difference is that Formspring didn’t have a mobile app, nor did it have an email service. It was still an interesting website to use though.
Formspring anonymous
Formspring is an online social Q&A site where users can ask and answer questions and also follow other users. The site is currently aimed at teenagers. Users can post anonymous questions and answers, or they can choose to remain anonymous.
Formspring officials claim their site is a new way for people to connect. They say it gives users a “safe and fun platform to share their opinions and the opinions of other people.”
Although the site is designed with teenagers in mind, it is not limited to that demographic. Some tech-savvy individuals use it to promote their business and build relationships with customers. However, there are also quite a few cyberbullies who flock to the site.
Cyberbullying has become a problem for a variety of reasons. In recent years, several teenage suicides have been linked to cyberbullying. A group of seven girls got into a fight after they argued on the Formspring service.

Formspring is a social page with questions and answers. It has 30 million users and hosted over four billion posts. The company partnered with a host of big names, including Funny or Die, MTV and Hearst. Initially, it was a purely social site but later expanded to mobile apps. During the site’s brief golden age, it was also a platform for celebrity news and media.
For example, the site’s Favorites section categorized users by entertainment verticals. Those lucky enough to know were able to post “tagged” questions that were seen by a select few. Similarly, a verified account allowed users to post in their names.
Formspring also boasted the ability to send and track anonymous comments. But if you didn’t have a real name, you could still be a target. Several teenage suicides were linked to cyberbullying at the site. In addition, the company sold users’ private information. Eventually, it ceased to function and is now defunct.

Unlike its rivals at the time of its demise, Formspring was not truncated into a shell of its former self. It has since resurrected its crown as the social network of choice for millennials everywhere. With over 20 million registered users, it has been a veritable goldmine of interesting humans. Despite the myriad of perks, one of the biggest pain points for many of its users has been the absence of a viable online dating platform. Luckily, the company is laying the groundwork for a full-on comeback, which will be as seamless and unscrambled as you would expect.
Having said that, it may be time for an update. One of the biggest changes will be a complete overhaul of the site’s interface, allowing it to continue to operate at full tilt. This is good news for its loyal followers who are plenty, as well as the hundreds of unemployed users who can no longer count on being hired.
Why did Formspring fail
As with any platform that gains its appeal for its anonymous features, Formspring’s users rushed in, but as the user base grew, so did the problems associated with anonymity. Cyberbullying got to the point where several teenage suicides were linked to the bullying that took place on site.
The startup sought to remedy that by partnering with the MIT Lab to search for a way to counter cyberbullying. Eventually, the site had to limit the anonymity feature, but that meant it would lose its appeal, users began to decline, and growth simply froze.
If success leaves traces, so does failure. Many platforms that focused solely on anonymous interactions had to pull the plug because of the predictable type of behavior that people tend to engage in when they cannot or need not be held accountable for their actions, even when those actions directly threatened another person’s mental or physical well-being.
