Sign up for an account

Before to be able to sign in, you have to register first by following the below steps:

Step 1: On the sign-in page, select Create an ID.me Account or visit ID.me

Step 2: Enter an email address, and choose a strong password

Step 3: After checking the box to accept the terms of use and privacy policy, select “Create account”

Note: You will receive a letter. Follow the instructions to validate the email.

Step 4:Select multi-factor authentication (MFA)

Step 5: Verify your identity including your Driver’s License, State ID, Passport, or Passport Card

Note: Use your mobile device to take a photo or upload existing photos from your computer.

Step 6: Enter all other requested information, including your Social Security number.

Step 7: Review and confirm your information to make sure it is accurate. Then select “Yes”

How to file for a Kentucky unemployment benefits claim?

There are three ways to do that:

With an online Unemployment Insurance account in Kentucky, you will be able to file a claim, submit weekly claims, and track general benefit account information. Use the online portal to get started.

The claimant portal is available:

Note: It will take you about 15 minutes to finish and is best completed all at once. You will be automatically logged out and the data you submitted may be lost if the page is dormant for 30 minutes.

The Office of Employment and Training suggests calling from a landline rather than a mobile phone because processing your application will be halted if the call is dropped from a mobile device.

Eligible for Kentucky applying claims

As in other states, eligibility for unemployment claims in this state is not based on need. That being said, there are many other requirements that you may be eligible for unemployment benefits:

Be a resident in the state of Kentucky.
Meet income requirements (have earned a minimum of $750 for at least a quarter of your qualifying period, $750 in total outside of the base period quarter in which you earned the most, and have earned at least 1.5 times your salary in the highest-paying quarter of your base period, have a salary during the last two quarters of the base period equal to at least 8 times the number of your weekly benefits)
Be capable, available, and actively seeking a job
Being out of work through no fault of yours

The estimated benefit in this state is 1.19% of your total income for the base period. The weekly maximum benefit amount is $415, while the weekly minimum payment is $39.

You must meet the following expectations:

You are not a disability and must be able to work for the entire benefit period. You don’t have to face any medical challenges to work while on the claim
You must be available to work at all times. You must not be on a break or vacation when applying for benefits
You must actively seek employment opportunities throughout the benefit period
You must not reject employment opportunities offered to you at any time during the benefit period
You must fully explain your job search efforts during your online eligibility review
You must have contacted at least three potential employers each week

The Kentucky Bureau of Unemployment Insurance (KOUI) pays your benefits in two ways: direct deposit and debit card. Note, however, that regardless of which option you choose, your very first unemployment benefit payment will be issued as a paper check.

You can always change the method used to issue payments by logging into the portal where you file claims. However, the default method is by debit card.

If you want to set up a direct deposit, you will need to enter information such as your bank account number and routing number. You don’t need to provide a driver’s license number as you do in some states, which makes the direct deposit option more accessible to Kentucky residents.

Direct deposit is free, secure and fast. Please note that UI Customer Service can help you set up direct deposit over the phone and answer troubleshooting questions, but cannot see your account and routing number for security reasons.

The other option is to receive payments on a UI debit card, which is the ReliaCard issued by US Bank (this card is used in several states). This method replaces the paper check option which was available until June 15, 2021.

The ReliaCard is not a credit card, but it is a debit card that can be used to make payments anywhere a VISA card would be accepted, as well as to withdraw cash at an ATM or through the intermediary of a bank teller. You must file for unemployment benefits every two weeks to get paid, whether you receive direct deposit or use a ReliaCard.

KOUI cannot guarantee back pay for weeks you missed, although these funds can be obtained by calling 502-564-2900 or emailing uIassistance@ky.gov. Your best bet for collecting weekly benefits is to ensure that you file your claims every two weeks on time in the portal.

Call 1-877-3my-kyui or 1-877-369-5984 to claim your weeks or check your payout. You can claim your weeks or get the status of the last week you claimed by utilizing a touchtone phone and a Voice Response Unit (VRU).
