The Darvaza gas crater, a far less apocalyptic name for the gates, is a large hole in the desert measuring roughly 230 feet (70 meters) wide and at least 65 feet (20 meters) deep. Soon after they found a natural gas pocket, the surface below the drill rig crumbled and the rig plunged into a natural gas cavern.
